What you get

Private by design

The converter is a program that runs in this page. Open your browser's network panel and watch: your photos are never sent anywhere.

Faithful copies

Date, camera, lens and exposure are carried into the new file, along with the colour profile, so Display P3 photos from a phone don't come out dull.

Location, your call

Phone photos record where they were taken. Choose "Remove location" before sharing and the coordinates are erased from the copy.

Metadata you can use

Download every field of every file as one CSV or JSON. Or read the metadata without converting at all.

More with an account

A free account raises the limit to 100 files a day and keeps each file's metadata in a searchable history you can export or delete at any time.

Resize on the way out

Pick a maximum size to shrink photos for email or the web. Original is the default, at full resolution.

Questions

Why can't I open HEIC files?

HEIC is what iPhones save by default. It makes smaller files than JPG, but Windows, older Android phones and many websites don't read it without extra software. Converting to JPG gives you a file that opens everywhere. More about HEIF and HEIC.

Is it really free?

Yes. You can convert 10 files a day without signing up, and 100 a day with a free account. Reading metadata is not counted. heif.io is paid for by Pixel Sentinel, which it is built on. If a software recommendation ever pays us a commission, the link says so.

How do I convert more than that?

Connect a Pixel Sentinel account in your heif.io account and the daily limit goes away. Each file you convert is also added to Pixel Sentinel, ready to show on your website.

Which format should I choose?

JPG for photos you'll share or upload: small and universal. PNG when you need every pixel exact, at several times the size. WebP for websites: smaller than JPG at the same quality.

What about Live Photos and bursts?

A HEIF file can hold more than one picture. The converter saves the main one and tells you when there were others.
